Reviewing the transition from UME to GME

The transition from medical school to residency has been identified as an area of medical education and training that is ripe for improvement. After the Invitational Conference on USMLE Scoring (InCUS) in March of 2019, the Coalition formed a detailed plan to take actions based on its recommendations—including the development of a cross-organizational panel to create solutions for challenges in the UME to GME transition.

Committed to improving UME-GME

InCUS met in March of 2019 to address the use of numeric scores on licensure examinations for residency selection. One of the four recommendations that emerged from InCUS was to create a cross-organizational panel that would provide solutions for challenges in the UME to GME transition. The five InCUS co-sponsors submitted a proposal to the Coalition requesting that it quickly and collaboratively address this recommendation, and the Coalition agreed to convene a group of its representatives and review the transition from UME to GME.
